Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions about our services, emergency shelter, or how we can help, you’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive. If you need more information or don’t see your question listed, please contact us—we’re here to help!

I'm not sure if I am experiencing domestic violence. How can I tell?

It is common to feel unsure if what you are experiencing is “normal” or abusive. It is especially confusing when the abuse is not physical, but it is important to know that not all domestic violence leaves physical bruises. Emotional, financial and other kinds of abuse can be devastating to those experiencing it. Our crisis advocates are available to be a sounding board for you with zero judgement.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence can receive support from us, regardless of gender, age, income level, or background. We do not have income requirements, and all services are confidential and free of charge.

The only qualification for supportive services is to be a victim or survivor of intimate partner violence. There are no income qualifications or any further information needed.

We understand that this distinction can be confusing and frustrating. Unfortunately, although these types of familial situations are often labeled domestic violence, Baraga County Shelter Home specifically serves intimate partner violence victims. This means that the violence or abuse is coming from a spouse, former spouse, dating partner, or someone whom you were once intimately involved with or have a child in common with. We are always happy to help you connect with the community services that are best suited to your situation, though.

No. We are happy to provide emergency shelter and comprehensive services to victims and survivors coming from Houghton County, Ontonagon County, throughout the Upper Peninsula, the state of Michigan and surrounding areas. Often fleeing means relocating to a safer area and we don’t turn away survivors based on the zip code of where they are coming from. We can also help you connect with services closer to home via one of our sister shelters; only you know what the best solution for you is.

We understand that pets are often a barrier to leaving safely and understand the concern. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept pets at this time. We continue to work towards being a pet-friendly shelter but can help you try to problem solve in the meantime.

You can still reach out to us – we understand that every situation is different and complicated, and we NEVER judge where you are in your journey. We can help you create a safety plan, provide emotional support, and connect you with resources—all without requiring you to leave your situation. Call our 24/7 crisis line for guidance and support.

Yes! Your safety and privacy are our top priorities. Any information you share with us is kept strictly confidential, and we will not disclose your details without your consent, except in cases required by law (such as mandated reporting for child abuse). In fact, we won’t even acknowledge that you are a client without your permission. If you have concerns about privacy, we can discuss ways to communicate safely.

Our Outreach Office is located at 115 N. Front Street, Suite 100, in L’Anse. It’s in the American Legion building, right next to the Secretary of State and across the street from IGA. The address of our shelter home is confidential and not shared publicly.

We happily accept donations of gently used clothing, outerwear, footwear, etc. Survivors starting over often need basic household items like dishes, pots and pans, blankets, and kitchen items like coffee pots. Gently loved, clean and complete toys, games or books are also welcome. We do NOT accept expired food, open bottles of shampoos or soaps, or large item donations such as furniture.

Donations may be dropped off Monday – Thursday, 9 am to 5 pm, at our Outreach office, located at 115 N. Front Street in L’Anse, Michigan. Because we are short staffed and often out and about assisting clients, we recommend giving us a ring before you stop by to ensure that someone is here. We are happy to meet you after hours if needed or whenever works best for you, dependent on staff availability. Just give us a call at 906-524-7079 and thank you!
