Volunteer

Community support was vital in the establishment of the Baraga County Shelter Home and it remains a vital component in our operations today. Strong community support is essential in the maintenance and expansion of services to the survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our area. We need your support, whether it be donations – monetary or in-kind, volunteering, or helping educate the community about the Baraga County Shelter Home’s mission and services.

Volunteer Requirements

  • At least one interview.  
  • An application and/or resume.
  • A domestic violence quiz taken pre-hire.
  • A check of three different personal or professional references.
  • Criminal history check done through IChat.
  • Child Protective Services Clearance through the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Check of necessary credentials, transcripts, licenses, accreditations, etc. as appropriate for positions.
  • Obtaining appropriate documentation (as listed in each employee/volunteer file).
  • Approval by Executive Director
  • State and National Sex Offender Registry Clearance
  • Employment eligibility through E-Verify.

Volunteer Training

Volunteer training varies depending on what services you will provide. At a maximum, volunteer’s will take part in 40 hours of training equivalent to the training process for our paid staff. At a maximum, training involves thoroughly going through all aspects of employee/volunteer training manual with staff, including the Cycle of Domestic Violence, Power and Control Wheel, as well as how to properly perform duties at BCSH, Inc.

  • Crisis Line (in home or at shelter)
  • Building maintenance

    • Yard work
    • Painting

  • Housekeeping
  • Child care
  • Children’s activities (reading books, crafts, etc.)
  • Events/Fundraising
  • Sharing specific skills (i.e. gardening, crafting, yoga, cooking, etc.)
  • Transportation
  • Shelter coverage
